When Elizabeth (Betty) Fitzgerald died on Sunday, November 8, 2015, at age 82, heaven gained a truly grand personality. Vivacious and indomitable, Betty met life’s challenges with great humor and tenacity.
Betty Green was born on November 19, 1932 in Dublin Ireland, and although she insisted that she spoke perfect “Canadian,” she never lost her lovely Irish lilt. In 1954, Betty followed her dreams and her heart to Canada, where Tony Fitzgerald, the love of her life, had settled a year earlier. They were married in 1955, and raised a lively brood of four children on the court of Langden Avenue in Weston, where a collection of newcomers to Canada became family. Parties were frequent, and Betty’s love of singing, story telling and good – or bad – jokes livened up many an evening. This trait distinguished Betty for her entire life.
Beginning with her first days in Canada, Betty brought charm, wit and a strong work ethic into the workplace. But it was in her work at home with her family that she found greatest pride and delight. John, Michael, Kevin and Jane were her life, and as the Fitzgerald crew expanded, Betty loved her role as mother-in-law and doting Nana.
In true it-takes-a-village style, Betty’s sister Doreen and husband Paddy lived next door in Weston, and later, in Malton, and cousins Sheilah and Brian Doyle grew up as integral parts of the extended clan. There was never a shortage of laughter and love to go around.
Her beloved son Michael’s too-early death in 1993 was a terrible sorrow for Betty, as was Tony’s passing in 2000. Betty never stopped giving Tony “yards” for leaving her behind. Yet her zest for life did not flag.

The past few years have been a tremendous test for Betty, one that she met with stubborn optimism. Her courage and perseverance were inspiring.
Betty is deeply missed by her children John (Maureen O’Reilly), Kevin (Heather), Jane (Rick Kaczor), and Michael’s wife Claudia. She also leaves her beloved grandchildren Erin (Zenan), Kaitlyn, Brittney, Elizabeth (Brandon), Michael, Kathleen, Rachel and Rebecca (Christian). The next generation is flourishing too with beautiful great grandson Jack.
Dear sisters Joan and Doreen (Paddy Doyle) and brothers Kit (Anne) and Pat (Jane) will remember Betty with love, along with many nieces and nephews.
Betty had great affection for her friends and caregivers at Cedarcroft Retirement Home and Baycrest Longterm Care. Thank you for your kindness and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the charity of your choice.
