After demobilization Ron returned to the BBC television service. In 1952 he and his wife Peggy (Smith) were married and three weeks later emigrated to Montreal Canada. There Ron joined Redifusion Inc, and participated in pioneering the development of the cable television industry from 1952 to 1985 when he retired in Toronto. During this period he also served as Director and Vice-President of the Canadian Cable Television Association and served on numerous committees. In 1972 he was named to the Honours List of the Association.
Ron and his family suffered a great loss in December 2005, when Peggy, his dear wife of 53 years and mother of Kay, Norma and Anthony, died after a short illness.
He is survived by his dear and loving wife of eight years Geraldine (Gerry), his adoring daughters Kay with Michael of Wimbledon, England, Norma of Oshawa, Ontario, and loving son Anthony (Tony) with April, treasured grandson Jacob and adopted grandchildren Justin, Seanesta, Catrina and Dylan of Barrie. In addition he leaves his sister Beryl and brother-in-law Reg of Yateley, Hampshire, England and step-sons Robert with Sheila, adored adopted grand-daughters Heather and Michelle,of Toronto and Jason with Seema of Ottawa, along with many life-long friends including Joyce and Don of Surbiton, England.
An ever passionate photographer he saw the world through his lens and found great joy in travel and in the company and experiences of others. Ron shared many loves with his family including sailing, fried clams on the warm beaches of Cape Cod, and pints of Guinness – particularly at his Father’s pub in Wimbledon. In his last years he took to the high seas with Gerry by his side and explored many places in the world with his particular favorites being the Panama Canal, Alaska, Ypres and Juno Beach. His comical rendition of “The Bricklayer” and “The Day War Broke Out” at any social gathering was unforgettable for all those blessed to have seen him in action.
Ron was an active member of Christ Church Anglican, Woodbridge since the early 1970’s, serving for several years in various capacities including Warden and Lay Reader. In 1985 he joined the Christ Church Choir of which he was president for many years, and in 2006 he became a tenor in the Toronto Choristers. Ron derived great joy from music. Whether spiritual hymns or rousing “oldies” his beautiful tenor harmonies gave delight to all.
A gracious, selfless British gentleman whose wisdom, kindness, humour and unconditional love will be dearly missed by all . Truly the gentlest of men.
”These precious days, I’ll spend with you”
Special thanks to Avtar and Gagan, Nursing Staff, 8th Floor, Etobicoke General Hospital, who cared for Ron with such dignity and respect.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ Church Anglican, Woodbridge or the Odette Cancer Centre at Sunnybrook Hospital.
